HOPE at NYU

About Us

Welcome to HOPENYU.org
The home of HOPE at NYU, a new initiative that is changing the lives of children and teens who are struggling with obesity. HOPE seeks to prevent and treat obesity in children through education, outreach, and research to reduce the risk of health problems that are associated with obesity such as diabetes and heart disease. Through its educational and research activities, HOPE will reach out to thousands of kids and their families to help them learn how to make better food choices and be more active so they can grow up to be healthier and happier.

And with your help, HOPE will have a far-reaching and lasting impact in the fight against childhood obesity.

Giving Kids HOPE

Established in 2005 by the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Foundation, HOPE, the Harris Obesity Prevention Effort, is a groundbreaking initiative at the NYU School of Medicine with a mission to fight childhood obesity with science. HOPE at NYU is committed to reversing this serious and preventable public health problem by developing effective preventive and treatment solutions for at-risk and overweight youth and their families. HOPE will communicate valuable information about the promotion of healthy living to children, families, professionals and policymakers.

HOPE's goals are to:

  • Increase public awareness regarding the risk of health problems and illnesses associated with obesity in children and adolescents.
  • Conduct research to prevent and treat obesity in youth, especially at-risk youth.
  • Develop prevention and treatment interventions that can be replicated in communities nationwide.

HOPE at NYU is based at the Child Study Center and draws faculty from across New York University.
