Christine
Ren, M.D., is the Founder
and Director of the NYU Program for Surgical Weight Loss
and Assistant Professor of Surgery at NYU School of Medicine. Dr.
Ren is considered by many to be the leading Lap-Band Surgeon
in the U.S. She has performed over 1,300 Lap-Band procedures,
more than any other surgeon in the country. Dr. Ren obtained
her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine
in Boston, Mass., followed by a residency in surgery at
NYU Medical Center. Dr. Ren went on to complete a fellowship
in advanced laparoscopic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical
Center, where she was involved as faculty in the minimally
invasive bariatric surgery workshops to train surgeons
in laparoscopic bariatric surgery.
A board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Ren was involved in refining the technical details leading to the first biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) and the first BPD with a duodenal switch (DS). She has also pursued research in vascular medicine, angiogenesis, and laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Dr. Ren is a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and services as chair of its insurance committee, with whom she is spearheading the creation of new CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes for bariatric surgeries, which will enable insurance companies to cover these operations.
In July 2006 Dr. Christine Ren was
nominated to the Executive Council of the American Society
for Bariatric Surgery as Councilman-at-Large.
Dr. Ren is recognized nationally and internationally for her
contributions to the field of bariatric surgery. She is the
recipient of a 2003 YWCA Woman's Achievement Award, has appeared
on "Oprah," and
was profiled in Crain's 2005 special issue on New
York's Rising Stars.
