Alexander Fielding, M.D., is Co-Director of
the NYU Program for Surgical Weight Loss and Associate
Professor of Surgery at NYU School of Medicine. Dr.
Fielding is a pioneer in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery.
Dr. Fielding studied medicine at the University of Queensland,
graduating in 1979, and completed his medical training
at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. During his postgraduate
training, he developed interests in laparoscopic and hepato-biliary-pancreatic
surgery and then pursued advanced training in the field
in Britain and Switzerland. In 1989, he returned Royal
Brisbane Hospital as a staff surgeon, and continues to
serve the Hospital as a visiting surgeon. Later, he opened
a private practice at the Wesley Hospital, also in Brisbane,
earning a reputation for his expertise in laparoscopic,
bariatric, and hepato-biliary surgery. To date, he has
performed more than 3,500 bariatric surgeries in Australia
and 1,200 at NYU, and has extensive experience operating
on "super" obese patients and obese children.
Dr. Fielding has been instrumental in the development of laparoscopic surgery and has taught the techniques to surgeons around the world and has published more than 150 journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters.
He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons (England). In addition, he is and a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, the Society of Surgery for the Alimentary Tract, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.

Dr. Fielding has written extensively on the subjects of bariatric surgery, laparoscopic general surgery, and pancreatitis, and has made numerous television appearances.
